Sweet & Spicy Dilis (Anchovies)

Dilis are small, but terribly delicious. Typically, you can have it tossed and it’s ready. But this sweet & spicy dilis recipe created a little twist. It would only take few minutes to prepare. Very easy and stress-free.

Adding some sweetness and spice to dilis makes it one great appetizer. You can eat this with rice or it’s a perfect pair for an iced cold beer or gin. You’re all set!

Ingredients:

1 cup dried dilis (anchovies)
1 tablespoon chili flakes (dried)
or
1 tablespoon fresh chili (chopped)
1/2 cup honey
1 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon vinegar
salt
pepper
oil

Process:

1. Heat oil in the pan.
2. Cook dilis until it turns golden brown.

3. Set aside.
4. On the same pan, put in the sugar, honey, chili and a tablespoon of water. Stir constantly until it caramelized.
5. Add in the cooked dilis and cook for another 5 minutes.

Ready. Serve and enjoy!

Dilis is one staple food in the Philippines. You can buy it almost anywhere. This recipe is also quite common, since this is often considered “pulutan”, which works perfectly with a bottle of beer.

Unlike the other sweet and spicy dilis recipes, I made this simpler. I used honey, sugar and fresh chili to get that sweet and spicy flavor. Simple and easy as that!

And remember, dilis is a good source of calcium, protein and omega-3 fatty acids. Such a healthy yet cheap food to eat.
